(Hōjō Tankō)

A castle coal mine

The castle coal mine (Hojo Tanko) is a coal mine in Tagawa-gun Fukuoka-gun (present · Fukuchi Town) in Fukuoka prefecture. It opened in 1902 as the main ore of Mitsubishi Joint Stock Company of Chikuho Coalfield, later Mitsubishi Mining (present Mitsubishi Materials). In 1914 (Taisho 3), Japan's largest coal mine explosion accident occurred. Closed mountain in 1964. Currently it is a factory of Kyushu Hitachi Maxell. A part of the remains of coal mines such as a pit work room, a pressure room, and a transfer bathhouse are preserved in the premises, and visitors can also visit if permission is obtained. Cargo branch lines are extending from Kaneda station, and concrete remains such as abutment tracks are scattered around Hikozan River. Empty houses of the staff maintaining prototype houses until around the year 2011, it seems that they were dismantled.
