(Ikejima Tankō)

Ikeshima Coal Mine

The Ikejima Coal Mine (Ike Shima Tanako) is a coal mine spreading to the seabed around Ikeshima, which is about 4 km around the west off the west off the Nishisonogi Peninsula, and it is also the last coal mine island in Kyushu. There are cases sometimes introduced as "Ike ○ coal mine" etc. Matsushima coal mine, a subsidiary of Mitsui Matsushima Sangyo Co., started coal mining in 1959 and then supplied coal to the coal-fired power plant of J-POWER, which was built in Matsushima after closing. Due to the vigorous demand in neighboring areas, mining of coal was progressed from the 1980s to the 1990s, and coal exceeding 1.5 million tons was mined in the peak of 1985. In the 1990s, the mining area approx 35,500 ha, the total extension distance of the tunnel reached approximately 96 km, the trajectory of the human car improved to shorten the traveling time of the coal mine, and a German high-speed car (commonly called " ") Was also introduced. However, after that, accidents occurred in coal mines one after another, and coal in Ikeshima became pushed by inexpensive overseas charcoal due to electricity liberalization in 1998 and closed in November 2001. All 2,500 employees at that time were dismissed. The amount of coal from the start of operations to closing is 44 million tons. Large scale remains can be seen throughout the island.
