(Matsushima Tankō)

Matsushima Coal Mine

Matsushima Coal Mine was a coal mine located in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Matsushima said that lime was mined from ancient times, starting from 1782 (Tian Ming Yuan). In 1913 (Taisho 2), Mitsui Mining acquired the Koga mining site and shared it. On 19th June 1929 (Showa 4), seawater flowed into the sandstone from the break of the sandstone and submerged, 42 people died. On November 25, 1934, the four municipalities (opening in the Taisho 3 rd) submerged with the earth and 54 people died. In March 1940 (the Showa 10), due to the influence of the hydraulic pressure of the four pits, the five pits (started in 1972) also increased spring water, it becomes impossible to produce coal and become a waste pit. While the Matsushima Coal Mine continues to keep the charcoal drilling of the first pitcher, it has decided to begin development of coal mines in Oshima. The fourth pit remains at the map position. It was completed in 1917 (Taisho 6).
