(Sakito Tankō)

Sakitado coal mine

The Sakito coal mine is a coal mine located in Sakito-machi, Nishi-shi, Nagasaki prefecture. About 60 years from Meiji 40 to Showa 43, it prospered by coal mining. Approximately 26 thousand people lived in the peak period, but due to a shift in fuel demand and a decline in the coal economy, in 1953 and 1943, two pits became abandoned and closed the history of the coal industry. Among them, the peace dormitory which was a lodging house of workers is famous as ruins. The remains of the Fukuura Power Station, Fukuura Ball Scroll, Fukuura Kaikan (SUGUEDO Theater) projection room and others are also left.
