(Mīke Tankō Manda Ana)

Miike coal mine Shimada pit

Mitsui Miike coal mine (Mitsui Mikake Tanko) is a coal mine having a wellhead in Fukuoka prefecture Omuta city, Miike gun Takada cho (present · Miyama city) and Karamoto prefecture Arao city. Mining was done from the Edo period, but in 1889, it was paid to Mitsui Zaibatsu. It was an existence that supported Japan's modernization, but it closed down on March 30, 1997. Manda mine was the main pit of the Miike mine, and it was the largest shaft facility that was developed with total power to make it a model of our coal mine at that time. The remaining second shaft and its surrounding facilities are designated as an important cultural property of the country, and a part of the site including the first shaft trace is designated as a national historic site.
