岩脇蒸気機関車避難壕 (Iwawaki Jōki Kikan Sha Hinan Gō)

全国的にも珍しい蒸気機関車を空爆から守るための避難壕である。米原駅からほど近い岩脇山に位置する。 米原駅は福井方面、名古屋方面、京都方面へと繋がる交通の要所で、往時は重要な軍事拠点でもあった。 岩脇山の岩盤が硬かったことからこの場所が選ばれた。東西に並んで2本の建設が始められたが、1本は貫通、西側の1本は未貫通のまま終戦を迎えている。全て手掘りで南北から中央へ向かって掘り進められていたという。 東側の貫通済み地下壕は全長約120m、幅2~3m、高さ最大約5m、最少約2m、西側は南側からは約53m掘られ、幅2~3.5m、高さが最大約4m・最少約1.5m、北側は約50m、幅2.5~4.0m、高さ最大約3.5m・最少約1.5mだが、浸水被害がひどい。 戦後は放置され、廃棄物が投棄されるなど荒れた状態にあったが、2008年から整備が始まり、2017年に米原市指定文化財として登録された。 入り口はフェンスで封鎖され、案内板が設置され管理されている。 見学会などが催されている。
