(Yoshino Kōzan)

Yoshino Mine

Yoshino mine (Yoshinosozan) is a mine located in Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture (formerly Yoshino Village). Gold, silver, lead, zinc, barite and gypsum were mined before the Edo period. Prior to the war, small-scale mining areas were operating separately. Among them, at Yoshino Goshozama (Yoshino gypsum mining site), a company that had mined and refined gypsum founded Yoshino gypsum after the Meiji Period (around 1901). Since then the efforts to produce and disseminate the gypsum board developed in the United States increased its popularity nationwide (Yoshino Gypsumous Mountain itself is absent from the time of abolition). Following the war, Japan mining has integrated mining areas and started operations, but also caused mineral toxicity such as acidification of rivers, outflow of cadmium, etc., closed in 1974. The mine wastewater treatment plant is still implementing neutralization work. The site of the gypsum mining site is being maintained as a forest of Yoshino plaster.
