長生炭鉱 (Chōsei Tankō)

長生炭鉱は山口県宇部市にあった炭鉱。1914年に開坑、最盛期には約800名の坑夫が働いていたと言う。1942年2月3日に落盤、水没事故が発生、閉坑された。183名の犠牲者は未だに遺骨も引き上げられずにかつての坑道内に閉じ込められたままである。 西岐波の沖合いに海底炭鉱の給排気の為に造られた「ピーヤ」と呼ばれるコンクリート製の煙突状施設が2本残っている。航空写真からも確認できる。 また海岸には廃墟化した炭鉱住宅跡などが見られる。
