Iwakura Coal Mine was a coal mine located in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. Operation commenced in 1901. In the beginning, mining of lignite was carried out, and at the peak of the year coal consumption of 6,000 tons per year was recorded. In the 1970s, the cheap, high-quality imported charcoal pushed down by the import charcoal, the sales channel contracted, the management company diversified the selling of quartz sand etc. From a part of geologists it was said that "a world of hobby rather than calling a business" was managed by rigorous rationalization, but the electric facilities were submerged due to the floods exceeding the assumed amount in 1997 and the recovery costs Problems such as the aging of the facility and the aging of the employees due to not being able to cover it have also overlapped, and in 2000 it became a practical closing mountain. Even at the time of closing, the coal seam still continues to the inner so it was possible to drill. The final management company is Iwakura surveying design corporation which the descendants of the founder run.
