東ノ川小中学校は、奈良県吉野郡上北山村にあった学校。 熊野川電源開発計画による坂本ダムが完成すると水没するため、1964年(昭和39年)にダム建設補償で当時としては画期的な鉄筋コンクリート構造の二階建て校舎を建て移転した。しかし、坂本ダム竣工に加えて海外からの輸入材解禁などを原因とする林業衰退が引き起こした急激な人口流出により児童・生徒がゼロの事態が続き、5年後の1969年(昭和44年)に休校となる(東ノ川集落も無人集落となった)。この新校舎で学んだ児童・生徒は小中学校合わせて全部で5名だけであった。 閉校後も取り壊されなかったものの、尾鷲市から約26kmも離れた人里離れた地形険しい山奥にもかかわらず(東ノ川からの人口流出の半数を占めた)尾鷲市などからの暴走族・不良により全ての窓ガラスやカーテンなどの設備が破壊されて至る所にスプレーで落書きされるなど見るも無残な状態になっている。 東ノ川には、1955(昭和30)年の国勢調査で375人の人口があり、東ノ川の河岸に下流から大塚・坂本・出合・古川・宮ノ平・五味・出口という集落があった。現在家屋跡などが見られるのは、東ノ川小中学校の位置する宮ノ平のみである。
