(Nara Kangoku Sho)

Nara Prison Station (formerly Nara Prison)

The Nara Prison Station (formerly Nara Prison) is the site of a juvenile prison located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It was built as "Nara Prison Station" in 1908 (Meiji 41). It is one of the five major prisons created by the Meiji government. Designed by Keijiro Yamashita (Yatata Keijiro), it is a robust and elegant architecture reminiscent of European castles and cathedrals with Romanesque architectural designs. The main gate with its well-decorated rooms also has rich decorations such as double-rounded roof towers and rose windows that decorate the center. These were said to have been constructed by prisoners at the time. It was renamed "Nara Prison" in 1922 (Taisho 11), and it was also renamed "Nara Shonen Prison" shortly after the war. It is only the Nara Shonen Jail, which remains in its entirety at the same time as the Prison Station built at the same time. It was open to the public only at the Nara Corrective Exhibition, which takes place once a year in September each year. Decommissioned in March 2017 (Heisei 29). The buildings will be managed as modern heritage, and will be preserved and utilized.
