(Yanokotōge)

Yano River Pass (National Route 42 old road)

Yano River Pass (Yonokohoga) is a pass between Mie Prefecture Owase City and Kumano City. Route 42 on the old road. In 1936, the motorway (Matsuzaka Shinsugi line of prefectural road) opened from the former pass to the southeast (later old national highway 41, after the second class national highway 170 and current national highway No. 42). The national railway bus ran until the Kisen main line opened, and the view from the bus was a magnificent view overlooking the Kumano nada. There existed tea houses that also serve as rest areas at the pass until the day before the Kisigami main line in 1959. In 1968, the Yano River tunnel penetrated south of the pass, so it was removed from Route 42. Currently, there is a section where the road is broken at Kumano City side, so you can not cross the ridge. In addition to bridges such as old-fashioned bridge, autumnal bridge, Takimi-bashi, Nanba Ohashi, Tang Dynasty bridge and other bridges, there are 1 st to 5 th tunnels, among which the No. 5 tunnel is 106.8 m in size and large in scale. There are also abandoned scrapped cars.
